This extraordinary piece by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun alludes to the Passions of J.S. Bach, yet is distinguished by the distinctive sounds of string instruments imitating the Chinese ehru and Mongolian horse-head fiddle. East truly meets West as vocal soloists not only sing, but play xun (a Chinese flute), while percussionists "play" water poured into 17 large, clear bowls arranged in the shape of a cross. Join us for this extraordinary Philadelphia premiere!

As Tan Dun remarks, "The sound of water is in my composition like a passacaglia theme - it is always present." Musically and textually, East meets West, ancient meets modern, and land meets water in highly compelling sounds and sights.
